Abstract

1335345 Penicillins BEECHAM GROUP Ltd 4 Jan 1971 [13 Jan 1970] 1505/70 Heading C2A The invention comprises sydnonyl penicillin of general Formula I or pharmaceutically acceptable salts or esters thereof, wherein R represents hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, phenyl or a phenylalkyl group with 1, 2 or 3 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain and R<SP>1</SP> is H or OH. A process for the preparation of the above penicillins comprises reacting a reactive derivative, e.g. an acid chloride, anhydride or mixed anhydride of Formula IV with 6-aminopenicillanic acid or a salt or ester thereof. The above penicillins are useful as antibacterial agents, as nutritional supplements in animal food, as agents for the treatment of mastitis in cattle and as therapeutic agents in poultry and animals, including man, in the treatment of diseases caused by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
