1335135 Broaching apparatus IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 17 July 1972 [2 July 1971] 31126/71 Heading B3L Apparatus for shaving metal sheet comprises means for drawing the. sheet along a passline AA, rollers 10, a shaving head on at least one side of the passline and extending transversely thereof (two heads 12, 13, shown), the head carrying a series of shaving blades 20 arranged in side-by-side relationship, the cutting edge 24 of each blade (except for one outer blade) partly overlapping the cutting edge of a next adjacent blade when viewed in the direction of feed of the sheet, each blade being supported by and releasably secured in the head whereby any one blade may be replaced without interference to the remaining blades, and each blade having between its cutting edge and the cutting edge of the blade which it overlaps, a relief groove 29 for the escape of metal shavings from the cutting edge of the blade which it overlaps. Head 12 is movable relative to the passline by a wedge 15 operated by a screw and a hand wheel. Head 13 is controlled by hydraulic devices 18. Individual movement of blade 20 is by screws 23 provided in as flange of each blade carrier 12a, 13a. The blades are set. in recesses 19 and are preferably at an angle of 70 degrees to the direction of the passline. On opposite sides of the passline they are aligned at opposite, angles to one another. The shaving heads and the associated blades may be reciprocable laterally of the passline. Each cutting edge is provided by a tungsten carbide insert 25 brazed on a soft steeh shank 26.
