Abstract
1334819 Spin resonance spectrometers SPECTROSPIN A G 30 March 1972 [28 May 1971] 15214/72 Heading G1N In a spin resonance spectrometer of the type in which interferograms are averaged and the resonance frequencies determined by Fourier Analysis, the sample spins are excited by two sets of R.F. pulses differing in phase by 180 degrees, at least approximately equal numbers of pulses from each set being used, and the averaged interferogram is obtained by adding the interferograms excited by the pulses of one set to those excited by the pulses of the other set with the sign reversed. Thus, interference signals caused by switching, cancel out. Pulses from the two sets may alternate, singly, in groups of equal number of pulses, or stochastically. The invention may be applied to spin echo spectroscopy and "deft" and "seft" cycles are explained with reference to Fig. 4 (not shown). In Fig.1, R.F. from R.F. generator 22 is modulated at 13 by a train of pulses (31) of alternate polarity from a pulse generator 23. Spin resonance signals from the sample 12 are amplified in a pre-amplifier 14 gated on by pulses (33) from generator 23 in the intervals between the R.F. pulses (32) applied to excite the spins. The output from amplifier 14 is heterodyned in a mixer 15 with the output of a local oscillator 24, amplified at 16 and phase detected at 17. The detected signals pass through a low pass filter 18 to a mean value converter 19 which receives pulses (34) from pulse generator 23 to determine the sign for each signal. 20 denotes a Fourier transformer.
