Abstract

1334772 Welding and cutting by fusion; soldering MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 23 April 1971 [24 April 1970] 11172/71 Headings B3R and B3V [Also in Division H1] A laser device is provided with a shield or hood surrounding the outlet apertures and formed of a material capable of absorbing and/or reflecting the laser radiation, at least part of the shield or hood being transparent to visible light to enable operations carried out by the laser to be observed. In Fig. 1, laser device 31 consists of beam 33 produced by laser 32, diverted by optical system 34, and directed by processing optical system 35 in tube 37 on to workpiece 36. Hood 30 is mounted over the workpiece 36 by screw 45 and consists of a number of magnifying segments 40, 40<SP>1</SP> internally coated with silicone 41. Reflected rays 43 are absorbed and/or reflected by hood 30 and prevented from entering the eyes 44 of a viewer. A protective gas atmosphere may be supplied via inlet 38 of tube 37 to prevent the formation of oxide during, e.g., welding, soldering or cutting of metals. In Fig. 2 the hood consists of a disc 51 with rim 53 directed towards workpiece 52; lower side 58 of 51 may be grooved. Hood 50 and component 54, which is a cutting nozzle for a CO 2 laser, are fastened on outlet 55 of the laser. In Fig. 3 the hood is a cylinder. The hood may be of quartz glass or, for a CO 2 laser, acrylic glass, and is preferably adjustable in position and distance from the outlet aperture. An exchangeable protective disc may be mounted between the radiation producer and the lens.
