Abstract

1334372 Alloying and purifying metal melts E STEINMETZ 6 Nov 1970 [8 Nov 1969] 53035/70 Heading C7D In a process for countercurrent flow of metal melt and slag (which term includes slag, stone or speiss) phases for transfer of element(s), under the influence of a chemical potential which varies from one end of the contact zone to the other, at least one of the phases is subjected to a force (other than gravity) in the direction of flow thereof, chemical potential creating elements are included at the slag and/or metal inlet ends, mixing within at least one of the phases is substantially limited, a position of max. concentration of the transferred element in the phase to which it is transferred is determined and a part of the enriched phase is removed at, or near said max. The chemical potential gradient may be varied along the flow path by addition of oxidizing and/or reducing agents. The force may be provided by a screw drive or by induction. In the production of ferro-alloys the metal melt may contain P, Si, Al, Mn or C as reductants the slag phase containing the elements in which the melt is to be enriched (e.g. P, V, Cr or Mn), in oxide or sulphide form. Apparatus: - Fig.4a shows metal melt (12) confined and driven forward in a helical trough (19) in countercurrent contact with slag phase (11) moved by helical confinements (20). A slow rate of rotation avoids mixing in the phases along the flow path. It is possible to use further apparatus in series. Enriched metal may be withdrawn through siphon (13), Fig.4b, Fig. 5 shows the metal melt conveyed uphill by induction of coils (22), the slag flowing down by gravity.
