Abstract

1334242 Packaging in pouches CLOUD MACHINE CORP 20 Oct 1970 [25 Feb 1970] 49772/70 Heading B8C In a packaging machine, a longitudinally folded web is transversely sealed to form a series of pouches which are distended prior to filling by moving adjacent transverse seals towards each other and by lifting the bottom of each pouch, the filled pouches then being sealed, severed from the web, and deposited in a shipping container. Web folding and transverse sealing, Fig. 2.-A web 22 is drawn from a spool 23 by a drive roller 26 and is passed through a folding plow 28. The folded web is then pressed by a vertical roller 129 against heated lands 33 carried by a rotary drum 126 to form transverse heat seals 34. The plow 28 is free to pivot about a vertical axis and is vertically adjustable. The lands 33 are so formed as to form a spout-like portion in the pouches (see Fig. 6). A rotary blade 148 which co-operates with inserts on the lands 33 forms slits 143 in the pouches to facilitate subsequent opening of the filled and sealed pouches. Bag distending and filling, Figs. 3 and 8.-The folded and transversely sealed web is fed to the arcuate run of a driven endless chain 161 and is gripped between rollers 169 and members 166<SP>1</SP> carried by the chains 161. The spacing between the members at the arcuate run of the chains 161 is equal to the spacing between the seals 34 and hence as the chains enter their linear run the seals 34 are moved towards each other. A driven disc 192 carries rod members 194 which engage and lift the bottoms of the pouches. Also, air is directed into the pouches from nozzles 44. The distended pouches are then carried past a filling station 43 which comprises a plurality of nozzles 203 carried by a wheel 201. The nozzles are sequentially fed with liquid by a pump 223 and each nozzle is, after filling a pouch, connected to a vacuum source (not shown) to prevent spillage. In a modification (Fig. 14) the feed passage to each nozzle includes a resilient tube (241) which is compressed during filling but is allowed to expand after filling. During filling the pouches are tilted by a plate 251 to prevent splashing. Pouch sealing and severing, and packaging of closed pouches (Figs. 3 and 4).-The filled pouches are next urged against a heated plate at a sealing station 49 to close the pouches. The series of filled and sealed pouches are then rotated through 90 degrees by rollers 52, 53 and severed from the web by a rotary cutter 57. The individual pouches drop into a shipping container and are counted by a photo-cell 63. When a predetermined number of pouches have entered the container 62, a baffle 64 is pivoted to collect pouches whilst the filled container 62 is replaced. Defective pouches are deflected away from the container 62 by a pivoted plate 61.
