Abstract

1334097 Aryl hydroxybenzoates ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 16 Dec 1971 [17 Dec 1970 18 Oct 1971] 58452/71 Heading C2C Aryl hydroxybenzoates of the general formula in which Ar is an unsubstituted or substituted aryl radical, are prepared by reacting an acyloxy benzoic acid of the general formula in which R is an alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, e.g. para-acetoxy, para-propionoxy- or meta-butyroxy-benzoic acid, with a hydroxyaryl compound of the formula Ar-OH, e.g. phenol, para- or metacresol, parachlorophenol or methoxy phenol in the presence of an esterification catalyst at a temperature of 100-260‹ C. The catalyst is preferably an acidic catalyst of strong acid such as sulphuric, phosphoric, para-toluene sulphonic acid or Friedel-Crafts type catalyst such as trifluoro boron. Tetrabutyl titanate, titanium sulphate, manganese, calcium, stannous and zinc acetate may also be employed.
