Abstract

Aerostats; cars.-A. kite balloon comprises a spherical gas-container a to which is attached a conical appendage b and stabilizing-bags c filled with air. The car g and rope h are connected at f to cords d which are attached to the envelope by catenaries e. There are three stabilizing-bags c spaced 120 degrees apart, the two upper ones being in free communication with the appendage b, which is connected to the lower one by a non- return valve s opening upwards. The appendage b and upper bags c are inflated with air before an ascent, through an opening v, which is afterwards closed, the pressure being subsequently maintained by the wind entering at r into the lower bag c and through the valve s. A safetyvalve q is provided on the appendage b. A ballonet l is provided in the gas-container and filled with air through an opening m. The ballonet also communicates with the lower bag c through an opening n. A valve o on the equatorial line of the balloon is operated by cords p connected to the diaphragm of the ballonet l.
