Abstract

1332871 Polycarbonates GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 19 April 1971 [13 April 1970] 25966/71 Heading C3R A thermal oxidatively stable polycarbonate is produced by reacting bisphenol A with a carbonate precursor in the presence of an acid acceptor, a catalyst and a molecular weight regulator, and of 0À000015-0À05 moles per mole of bisphenol A of an ester of a phosphorodihalidous acid of the formula in which X is fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine and R is an aryl, haloaryl, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or alkaryl radical containing 1-25 carbon atoms. The carbonate precursor may be a carbonyl halide or bishaloformate, the acid acceptor may be a tertiary amine or an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide, carbonate, bicarbonate or phosphate and the molecular weight regulator may be phenol, cyclohexanol, methanol, paratertiary butyl phenol or parabromophenol. A moulding composition may comprise the polycarbonate and 0À01-1% by weight of an epoxy compound of the formula in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen,. alkyl, cycloalkyl, substituted cycloalkyl, aryl, substituted aryl or heterocyclic organic radicals or two of the radicals together with the group form a cycloalkyl or substituted cycloalkyl ring, the organic radicals containing 1-24 carbon atoms. In examples 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxy phenyl)-propane, C 6 H 5 -O-PCl 2 and phosgene are reacted together in the presence of methylene chloride, calcium hydroxide, p-tertiary butyl phenol and triethylamine, and the phosphoruscontaining polycarbonate produced blended with 3,4-epoxycyclohexyl methyl 3,4-epoxycyclohexane carboxylate and moulded.
