Abstract

1332557 Cleaning metal web NYBY BRUKS A B 19 April 1971 [15 April 1970] 27338/71 Heading C7E [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for cleaning or degreasing web material, in particular a web of stainless steel, consists of a tank 7 containing a solution of detergent having an HLB value (hydrophiliclyophilic balance) of at least 10 which is supplied to sprays 3 and 5 via pump 8, a pair of doctor rolls 1 which remove superfical contaminants, circular rotary brushes 4 which agitate the detergent on the web surface, doctor rolls 6 which remove detergent solution remaining on the surface and collecting vessel 9 which collects used detergent solution prior to the return via pump 8<SP>1</SP> to tank 7. By means of this apparatus the web is subjected to a cleansing routine consisting of mechanical removal of surface dirt, washing with detergent, agitation of detergent solution to solubilize remaining contaminants, flushing with clean detergent solution and mechanical removal of detergent solution. The detergent solution is such that it can form an emulsion with oil only when agitated and, when agitation is ceased, oil separates out completely and then the detergent can be re-used.
