Abstract

1332492 Protecting ends of rolls of sheet material J O HEROUX 6 Nov 1970 52865/70 Heading B8C The ends of rolls of flexible strip, or sheet, of material such as paper, metal foil, synthetic resin film &c., which is wound upon a hollow core 2 made for example of cardboard, or plastics, and projecting from the end faces of the roll, are protected by protectors 6 each of which is preferably made of expanded cellular synthetic resin and comprises a disc 7 with a coaxial, generally cylindrical, plug 10 to frictionally engage within the core 2, the inner face 9 of the disc having an annular groove 12 adjacent the root of the plug 10. to receive the corresponding projecting end of the core 2. The protectors are moulded in one piece, for instance from expanded polystyrene, or polyurethane of cellular construction, and the core 2 may have a tapered bore 13 to assist removal from the mould. After the protectors 6 have been fitted to a roll the latter is surrounded by successive layers of corrugated fibre-board and Kraft paper which is glued to the outer edges 15 of the protectors. For large, heavy rolls the interior of. the plug of each protector is reinforced by a metal sleeve (28), Fig. 3, not shown.
