Abstract

1332230 Adhesives containing adducts of polybutadiene or halogenated polybutadiene WHITTAKER CORP 12 Nov 1971 52660/71 Headings C3E and C3P An adhesive composition comprises an adduct polymer consisting of a combination of polybutadiene or halogenated polybutadiene and a substituted cyclopentadiene, the ratio of the substituted cyclopentadiene monomer to the butadiene monomer units in the polybutadiene or halogenated polybutadiene being between 0À2 and 1À5 moles to 3 moles and, per 100 parts by weight of said adduct polymer, 25 to 150 parts of dibasic lead phosphite, 2À5 to 25 parts of resorcinol and a solvent for the adduct polymer. The composition may also contain a dispersing agent, e.g. fumed silica or sodium aluminosilicate, carbon black or a formaldehyde donor such as hexamethylene tetramine. In the examples polybutadiene is chlorinated, optionally brominated, and then reacted with hexachlorocylcopentadiene or 1,2,3,4 - tetrachloro - 5,5, - dimethoxycyclopentadiene in ethyl toluene. Dibasic lead phosphite, resorcinol and, optionally, silica or hexamethylene tetramine, or a mixture thereof with carbon black, are added to the resulting solution which is applied to steel, which is then bonded to an SBR, polychloroprene or natural rubber formulation and the assembly is cured. Rubberrubber, metal-metal, or rubber-wood bonds may also be formed. Other specified substituted cyclopentadienes are hexabromocyclopentadiene and 2<SP>1</SP>,3<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP>-tetrachloro-1,3-dioxolane-2-spirocyclopenta-2<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP>-diene.
