Abstract

1331428 Unsaturated polyester resins IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 Oct 1970 [6 Nov 1969] 54431/69 Heading C3P A polymerizable polyester resin composition which is solid at ambient temperature comprises an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and an alkyl derived from neopentyl glycol, fumaric acid and isophthalic acid and/or terephthalic acid, at least 75 mole per cent of the total dibasic acid being fumaric acid. Suitable monomers include vinyl toluene, C 1 -C 6 alkyl methacrylates and acrylates, trialkyl cyanurate and alphamethyl styrene. Preferred monomers are styrene and diallyl phthalate. The alkyd drain may be stopped by a monobasic saturated acid or monohydric saturated alcohol e.g. 3, 5, 5-trimethylhexanoic acid or 3,5,5-trimethylhexanol. Phenolic stabilizers may be added to the composition e.g. hydroquinone or 4-tert-butyl catechol. The composition may be cured using an initiator e.g. benzoyl peroxide.
