1330525 Polyester polyols DEUTSCHE GOLDUND SILBER - SCHEIDEANSTALT 5 Nov 1970 [6 Nov 1969] 52658/70 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] An optionally branched polyester polyol of average molecular weight 300-3000 is produced by polymerizing a lactone of the formula in which R is an alkyl radical with 1-4 carbon atoms or a hydrogen atom and n is 4 or 5 in the simultaneous presence of water, one or more alkylene oxides with 2-6 carbon atoms, e.g., ethylene oxide, propylene oxide and 1,2- butylene oxide, or a substitution product thereof, e.g. epichlorohydrin or a glycidyl ether and dibutyl tin oxide or an organic hydrolysisresistant titanate or zirconate or zirconium salt lactone polymerization catalyst, e.g. zirconium octoate. There may also be present during the polymerization an alkoxylation catalyst, e.g., triethylene diamine, dimethyl formamide or acetamide, tetrastearyl titanate, titanium glycolate or zirconium octoate, and a diepoxide of, for example, the formula in which X is (a) alkylene, cycloalkylene or arylene or (b) -M-Z-N- in which Z is O or S and M and N are alkylene, cycloalkylene, arylene or arylalkylene. The reaction may be carried out under nitrogen pressure in an autoclave at an elevated temperature. In examples polymers are prepared using (a) #-caprolactone, water, ethylene oxide, dibutyl tin oxide and dimethyl formamide or zirconium octoate, (b) #-caprolactone, water, propylene oxide, dibutyl tin oxide and zirconium octoate, (c) #-caprolactone, water, propylene oxide, zirconium octoate, triethylene diamine and ethylene glycol diglycide ether, and (d) #-caprolactone, water, 1,3-butane diol diglycide ether, ethylene oxide, dibutyl tin oxide and zirconium octoate.
