1330381 Packaging flattened bags WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER 19 April 1971 [17 April 1970] 25873/71 Heading B8C Stacks 2 of flattened bags from a bag making machine A are orientated by parcelling apparatus D so that in a parcel to be packaged by apparatus C, the bottoms of the bags in adjacent stacks point in opposite directions. The packages 3 are thus parallelepipedal. Grippers G carry the stacks 2 from the machine A to the parcelling apparatus D where they arrive bottom first. Successive stacks are turned sideways through 90 degrees in alternately opposite directions and deposited on a table 5 by the mechanism shown in Fig. 2. Each stack 2 is initially gripped between a rotatable plate 9, which is fixed relative to a slide 7, and a rotatable plate 11 mounted on a frame 10 which is pivoted relative to the slide 7. After the stack 2 is gripped, the slide 7 is moved downwardly on guide rods 6, 6<SP>1</SP> so that a fixed rack 22 acting through a toothed wheel 17 and connecting rod 18 rotates the plate 11, and thus the stack 2, through 90 degrees. Successive downward movements of the slide 7 oscillate the plate 11 through 90 degrees. The wheel 17 includes a freewheel device so that upward movements of the slide 7 do not move the plate 11. The transfer of each stack 2 to the table 5 is completed by a gripper which slides on rods 26, 26<SP>1</SP> and whose jaws 23, 24 are operated by the co-operation of a roller 29 with a fixed rail 30 and a movable rail 30<SP>1</SP>, the latter opening the jaws near the top of their upward travel and closing them at the top of their upward travel. Each stack 2 deposited on the table 5 is transferred by a pusher 33 to a parcelling station 36 where the stacks are retained by brushes 37, fingers 38 and springs 56. The arrival of each stack is signalled to a counter 45 by a photoelectric senser 46, 461. When a predetermined number of stacks has been counted, a programmer 44 actuates a pusher 39 to move the completed parcel to the wrapping apparatus C. The table 5 is formed by parallel bars, and the pushers 33 and 39 and gripper jaws 23 and 24 are in the form of fingers which can move between the bars. To accommodate different bag sizes, the parcelling apparatus D is movable along a track 57 by a screw 58. Each stack may be stapled at 55 prior to parcelling.
