Abstract

1330227 Polyurethane foam GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 2 June 1971 [8 July 1970] 18680/71 Heading C3R A catalyst for use in the preparation of waterblown polyether polyurethane foams comprises: (I) an organotin compound, (II) a quaternary ammonium base and (III) an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl ester of an organic or inorganic acid which splits off its acid derived portion so as to neutralize II. III is defined in the broadest sense as the reaction product of an alcohol and acid and includes ethylene bis-chloroacetate, trichloroethyl phosphate, a chlorinated paraffin, a partially hydrolysed copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride, hexachlorobenzene and methyl-p-toluene sulphonate. Preferred III are those derived from acids, the strongest of which, in a specific ester has, in an aqueous soln. at room temperature, a pK value for the first dissociation stage of <2. I may be stannous octoate and II may be tetramethylammonium hydroxide. A polyurethane may be prepared by reacting a polyether polyol, a polyisocyanate, water and the catalyst combination set out above. Use of this catalyst reduces the residual odour normally associated with polyurethanes prepared from organotin and quaternary ammonium base catalysts.
