Abstract
1330173 Iron oxide LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 June 1971 [11 July 1970] 33754/70 Heading C1A Iron oxide is prepared from iron halide (excluding the fluoride and probably the iodide) by (a) Reacting the iron halide in the presence of iron oxide with insufficient oxygen to give complete conversion of the iron to the ferric state in a first stage. (b) Withdrawing iron oxide and halogen separately from (a). (c) Passing the halogen to a second stage and contacting it with further iron oxide at a temperature low enough, e.g. 100‹ to 200‹ C. to condense the iron halide in the halogen stream. (d) Removing iron oxide contaminated with iron halide together from the second stage and separately removing pure halogen. (e) Passing the iron compounds from (d) to a third stage where they are reacted with an excess of oxygen to produce pure iron oxide which is withdrawn and the impure halogen which is passed with iron halide to (a). The halide may be carried by an inert gas stream and the reaction in each stage may be carried out under fluidized bed conditions. When the iron oxide product from the first stage is low in impurity iron halide it may be combined with the iron oxide product of the third stage or when the iron oxide from the first stage contains much iron halide it may be combined with the product iron oxide and iron halide of the second stage and then passed to the third stage.
