Abstract
1329709 Oxychlorinated process IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 May 1971 [11 May 1970] 22669/70 Heading C2C Olefins are oxychlorinated by reaction with ammonium chloride and molecular oxygen in the presence of an oxychlorination catalyst, there being employed a molar ratio of oxygen to define of 3/4 : 1 to 2 : 1, of oxygen to ammonium chloride of # : 1 to 1 : 1, and of olefin to ammonium chloride of 0À9 : 2 to 1À1 : 2. The oxychlorination of ethylene to 1,2-dichloroethane is exemplified. Specified catalysts are fixed or fluidized beds of cupric chloride and/or zinc chloride optionally together with potassium, sodium or rare earth chlorides, supported on alumina or silica of high or low surface area. A helium diluent may be used.
