Abstract
1329708 Angular bending DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 30 Dec 1970 [31 Dec 1969] 63531/69 Heading B3E [Also in Division G1] A replica of a master pipe or rod 26, Fig. 1, having angularly related straight portions S1, S2, S3 interconnected by bends B1, B2, is made by taking measurements of the master in a spatial co-ordinate system, feeding the measurements in digital or analogue form into a computer, and causing the output of the computer to control a bending machine 50, Fig. 7, so as to bend straight pipe or rod stack 58 into the shape of the master. The measurements are taken at two spaced points on each straight portion by a V-shaped probe 14 mounted on a graduated bar 12 slidable vertically in a carriage 10 which is movable horizontally along a graduated bar 8 fixed to a further carriage 6 movable horizontally, along another graduated bar 4. Alternatively, measurements may be taken at a single point on each straight portion together with the relative angular positions of two adjacent straight portions. Another measuring device, Fig. 4 (not shown), is provided for use with pipes (58) in situ on an aircraft engine. The bending machine, Fig. 7, comprises an indexed chuck 56 for gripping the pipe or rod stack 58, slidable along a guide 52 provided with linear indexing mechanism 70. The stock is bent around a mandrel 64, by a vice 61, with the extent of bending being determined by an indexing mechanism 68.
