Abstract

1329652 Pigment masterbatches BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 19 April 1971 [4 Feb 1970] 20985/71 Heading C3P Pigment masterbatches compositions contain, based on the total of (a)-(c) (a) 25-80% by weight of a styrene/maleic acid half ester copolymer, (b) 20-75% by weight of a pigment (which is insoluble in water or organic solvents) and optionally, (c) 0-20% by weight of a plasticizer and/or (d) not more than 10% by wt. of a solvent. The pigment may be for example a phthalocyanine, anthraquinone, perylene, azo or quinacridone dye, or an inorganic pigment such as TiO 2 , ZnS, iron oxide, a lead chromate, a cadmium pigment, or carbon black. A mixture of pigments may be used. Plasticizers which may be used are, for example, dibutylphthalate, butyl-benzyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate or dimethyl-glycolphthalate or a urea/formaldehyde plastic resin or an adipic acid/propane diol polyester. In the examples, masterbatches are prepared using a styrene/maleic acid butyl halfester copolymer, dibutyl phthalate and (1) copper phthalocyanine, (2) carbon black, (3) lead chromate and (4) the calcium salt of the dye from a chloro-p-toluidinic acid/#-oxynaphthoic acid coupling product, and (5) the above polymer, dioctyl phthalate and quinacridone. In Examples (1) and (4) the pigment is added as an aqueous paste, and the water is subsequently removed by heat. Example 6 describes the preparation of an ink composition from the masterbatch of Example 2 by mixing with ethanol, ethylene gylcol, and a nitrocellulose laquer comprising alcohol soluble nitrocellulose, dibutylphthalate 2-ethoxy ethanol and ethanol.
