Abstract

1329635 Cable joints and terminations; insulators MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 20 April 1971 10205/71 Headings H2C and H2E A device for relieving dielectric stress in high voltage shielded and insulated cables comprises a housing, one or more ground electrodes adapted to be connected to the shielding of one or more cables and one or more tubes comprising a titanate and/or titanium dioxide surrounding an exposed portion of the insulation of the or each cable and contacting a respective ground electrode. The device may be used at a cable splice, at the support between a transmission line and a transmission tower or, as shown in Fig. 3 at a cable termination. A conductively glazed porcelain housing 30, supported by a mounting bracket 34, contains the end of a cable 20 comprising a conductor 22, insulation 26 and shielding 24, a ground electrode 14, a high voltage electrode 16 and a tube 12 supported within dielectric filler 28. The tube 12 which is composed of barium titanate and a ceramic and has a relative permittivity of 600, has its ends coated with silver and contacting the electrodes 14, 16. The filler 28 may comprise rubber, silicone grease, phenol-aldehyde, silicone gums or resins and the tube may be additionally supported by springs or clamps (not shown); the tube may also comprise MgO, hexamethylene diamine and hexafluoropropylene. In the embodiments of Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the tube contacts only one electrode or comprises two portions contacting the ground and highvoltage electrodes respectively but not each other.
