Abstract

1329226 Coking oils LUMMUS CO 21 April 1971 [28 April 1970] 10533/71 Heading C5E In the delayed coking process for making petroleum coke from a pyrolysis residual heavy black oil (B.R. 375‹ to 425‹F), e.g. from a steam cracking process in which the oil is preheated in a soaking tank to a temperature of at least 450‹F for at least 5 minutes, sulphur, e.g. in elemental form or as mercaptan, is added to the oil before or during preheating in amounts of at least 30 p.p.m., and preferably 100 to 200 p p.m.. The preheated oil is passed to a heater operated at a pressure of at least 40 psig and on to the coking drums, the vapour lines of which may include a quench system. Condensates are recycled through a fractionator to the feed leaving the preheater. In a modification, the oil is preheated in the reboiler section of a distillation column which removes lighter fractions from the oil.
