Abstract

1329214 Contact printing AMP Inc 24 Aug 1971 [25 Sept 1970] 39755/71 Heading G2A Apparatus for printing a pattern from an endless master film transparency 16 on to a photosensitive layer on one side of a web 1 comprises drive means arranged to feed the web continuously to an exposure section 38, a storage chamber for the master film comprising a pair of racks 44, 46 positioned on one side of the web feed path and movable towards and away from each other, the adjacent sides of the racks having generally parallel fingers 50 spaced longitudinally of the web feed path, the fingers of each rack being offset with respect to those of the other rack and carrying rollers 52 around which the master film is looped and guide and registration,means e.g. sprockets and rollers which guide the master film from the storage chamber into contact with the photo-sensitive layer and maintain them superposed during exposure. The web 1 and endless master film 16 are fed into the exposure section 38 at 68 and 64 respectively, the master film coming into contact with a photo-resist layer on the upper surface of the web after passing round a sprocket 74. The web and film then pass in registration around a resilient roll 78 and glass roll 80 housing a mercury vapour lamp 90. The lamp is surrounded by two opaque sleeves 86, 88 having elongate slits 81 the registry of the slits defining an exposure aperture the width of which may be adjusted by rotating sleeve 86 relative to sleeve 88. The glass roll also houses two hollow tubes of arcuate cross-section 129, 131 which are supplied with liquid coolant in counterflow. After the upper surface of the web has been exposed the film 16 leaves the section and the lower surface of the web which may also carry a photo-resist layer may be brought into contact with and exposed to a second endless master film 18 in a way similar to that described above for film 16. In the storage chambers for the master films rack 44 is fixed while rack 46 is mounted by sliding bushings 49 on vertical posts 48 thus by sliding rack 46 up and down the spatial separation of the racks may be altered enabling the accommodation of endless master films of variable length e.g. 6 feet to 50 feet. The invention is described with particular reference to a photo-etching apparatus for making printed circuits in which a metallized web is cleaned, coated with photo-resist, exposed to the master films, as described above, and etched.
