1329033 Maleic anhydride/vinyl ether copolymer derivatives GAF CORP 19 April 1971 [24 Feb 1970] 22355/71 Heading C3P A water-soluble interpolymer comprises units of the general Formulµ I and II wherein Y represents halogen, hydrogen, alkyl having less than 6 carbon atoms or phenyl; X represents a single chemical bond, oxygen, sulphur, carboxy or carbonamido; R 1 represents the same or different hydrocarbon radicals containing from 6 to 36 carbon atoms in different units, the hydrocarbon radicals being selected from a normal chain alkyl, a branched chain alkyl, cycloalkyl and alkylaryl radicals; R 2 represents the same or different radicals in different units selected from alkyl having less than 6 carbon atoms and in which q represents 1, 2 or 3 and m represents 0, 1, 2 or 3 and A and B each independently represent a radical selected from wherein R 3 is hydrogen or an alkyl having 1 or 2 carbon atoms; R 4 is a normal chain alkylene having less than 6 carbon atoms, a branched chain alkylene, a cycloalkylene or a heterocyclic group containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms; and R 5 and R 6 are individually alkyl groups containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkoxy alkyl radicals containing from 2 to 6 carbon atoms or when taken together with the N atom, a heterocyclic ring containing from 2 to 5 carbon atoms. In the examples maleic anhydride, n-octadecyl, n-hexadecyl and methyl vinyl ethers are copolymerized in the presence of benzene and azobisisobutyronitrile. A copolymer of maleic anhydride and methyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl and tetradecyl vinyl ethers is reacted with dimethylaminoethanol and dimethylaminopropylamine and thickened hydrochloric acid solutions prepared.
