Abstract

1329031 Aerials PLESSEY CO Ltd 15 Jan 1971 [31 Jan 1970] 4776/70 Heading H4A A spherical radio reflector, which may be suspended from a balloon and be provided with a parachute, comprises a hollow substantially rigid self-supporting figure and has a reflective coating. The spherical figure may be formed from a suitable material by a blowing process but, as described, it comprises two half-shells fabricated from expanded polystyrene. These are provided with internal opposed tongues and external recesses around their rims. The external hemispherical surfaces and the mating surfaces of the shells are metallized by a spraying or vacuum deposition process. On assembly, the internal tongues interlock, and an external circumferential groove is formed by the two recesses. In this groove an internally toothed metal band is inserted, and is tightened by means of a buckle, so holding the two shells firmly together.
