Abstract
1328446 Impact-resistant moulding materials BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 19 April 1971 [29 Jan 1970] 20532/71 Headings C3G and C3P An impact-resistant thermoplastic moulding material comprises a mixture of: (A) from 70 to 99% by weight based on the weight of (A) plus (B) of a homopolymer of styrene or of a copolymer of styrene with up to 60% by weight based on the weight of (A) of a styrene derivative bearing a substituent on the nucleus and/or on the vinyl side chain; and (B) from 30 to 1% by weight based on the weight of (A) plus (B) of a soft component consisting of: (1) an α- olefin polymer and (2) a substantially gel-free and uncrosslinked copolymer of a vinylaromatic compound and a diene hydrocarbon which has been prepared by a method involving anionic solution polymerization and is optionally wholly or partly hydrogenated, "Substantially gel-free and uncrosslinked" means that no more than 10% by weight of the copolymer remains as an insoluble residue when 1 part by weight of the copolymer is dissolved in 100 parts by weight of toluene. The material may be made by (1) mixing components (B1) and (B2) with less than 40% by weight of the total amount of (A) as a batch and then incorporating the mixture into the remainder of component (A) or (2) mixing a solution of component (B2) with components (A) and (B1) and removing the solvent. In the examples the compositions comprise polystyrene, polyethylene, styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer, mineral oil, phenolic antioxidant, styrene-butadiene block copolymer (which may be selectively hydrogenated), graft copolymer of polybutadiene and styrene, statistical copolymer of butadiene and styrene, and a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and dicyclopentadiene. The material may be crosslinked using di-tertiary butyl peroxide and #-rays from a Van de Graaff generator.
