Abstract
1327672 Lasers COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 19 April 1971 [6 Feb 1970] 20329/71 Heading H1C The output beam of a laser generator is passed through a pupil 2 and a converging lens system 9 so placed that the beam diverges as it passes through subsequent amplifying media 3, 4 and 5. The pupil 2 may be an apertured resonator mirror, and solid, liquid or gaseous active media may be used. The various lengths shown on the Figure are chosen to produce an image B of the pupil at the centre of the amplifying media. The diverging beam prevents fracture or damage of the amplifiers, and the ratio of L : I in the Figure is large to prevent Fresnel rings which result from diffraction around the pupil from causing non-uniformities in the beam. This allows the amplifiers to be operated close to the fracture limit. The area around the focus F of the lens system may be evacuated to prevent any breakdown. A single amplifier may be used.
