Abstract
1327644 Esters of pulvinic acid derivatives SMITH KLINE & FRENCH LABORATORIES 2 Dec 1971 [3 Dec 1970] 55986/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] Novel compounds of the Formula I wherein R is methyl or ethyl and R 1 and R 2 are each hydrogen, methyl, dichloro, n-butoxy, methylthio, methylsulphinyl, methylenedioxy in adjacent positions or combinations chlorine, bromine, fluorine, methyl and C 1-4 alkoxy, provided that both R 1 and R 2 are not hydrogen may be prepared by (a) ring opening of the lactone II in the presence of ethanol or methanol, (b) bromination of the compound I in which R 1 and R 2 are hydrogen, (c) oxidation of the group R 1 and/or R 2 methylthio to methylsulphinyl. The intermediate lactone II may be prepared by reacting a phenyl acetonitrile with diethyl ester of oxalic acid to yield an ethyl S-cyano-3- phenyl pyruvate which is reacted with the same or different phenylacetonitrile to yield a 2,5- diphenyl-3,4-dioxoadiponitrile which on hydrolysis yields a pulvinic acid from which the lactone may be formed by treatment with acetic acid.
