Abstract
1327581 2 - (Cyclohex - 1<SP>1</SP> - enyl) - cyclohexanone; o-phenylphenol COAL TAR RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 12 Oct 1970 [11 July 1969] 35114/69 Heading C2C 2 - (Cyclohex - 1<SP>1</SP> - enyl) - cyclohexanone is obtained by heating 2-(1<SP>1</SP>-chlorocyclohexyl)- cyclohexanone either with an alkali metal carbonate or in the absence of an alkaline material. The heating with carbonate may be effected at 55‹ to 95‹ C. and the heating in absence of alkaline material may be effected at 120‹ to 200‹ C. 2-(1<SP>1</SP>-Chlorocyclohexyl)-cyclohexanone may be obtained by reacting cyclohexanone with hydrogen chloride. This hydrogen chloride may be obtained from the first step as a by-product. Examples are given which illustrate this process. o-Phenyl-phenol with or without o-cyclohexylphenol may be obtained by catalytically dehydrogenating 2 - (cyclohex - 1<SP>1</SP> - enyl) - cyclohexanone, preferably at 300‹ to 500‹ C., in the liquid or vapour phase. Specified catalysts are noble metals which may be supported, e.g., by charcoal, alumina or kieselguhr. o-Cyclohexylphenol may be converted to o-phenyl-phenol by catalytic dehydrogenation. Examples are given which illustrate these processes.
