Abstract
1327488 Safety belt with energy absorbing device TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUSHO KK 11 Dec 1970 [13 Dec 1969] 58984/70 Heading A3V [Also in Division F2] A vehicle safety belt utilises an energy-absorbing device A comprising a cylinder 3 within which a foamed plastics body 4 is held between one end 31 and a moveable pusher plate 5 and comprises a belt 21 which is connected to a rod 52 passing through apertures 32 and 41 in cylinder end 31 and foamed plastics body 4 respectively and fixed to the pusher plate 5. The other end 6 of the cylinder may be fixed to a portion of the vehicle as shown or may be attached to the end of another belt. Forward motion of the wearer of the safety belt causes a tension in belt 21 thereby pulling the plate 5 towards the end 31 of the cylinder and compressing the foamed plastics body 4, the cellular destruction of which absorbs part of the kinetic energy of the wearer of the belt. In one modification the pusher plate 5 has a conically shaped pushing surface and is embedded in the plastics foam, while in a second modification the end wall 31 of the cylinder is separate and larger in diameter than the cylinder and can be fixed to the body of the vehicle by bolts which also secure the end 31 to a circular flange which forms the open end of the cylinder. A second embodiment B in Figure 16 has a plastics foamed body held between plates 91 and 94 of a link of hexagonal cross section each of the six plates 91 to 96 being hinged to its two nearest neighbours. Belts 22 and 23 are secured by means of 101 and 102 to opposite hinged portions so that tensions in the belts cause the plates 91 and 94 to relatively approach each other thereby compressing the foamed body as before. This embodiment is suitable for placing under a seat of the vehicle, the belts being guided by pulleys. The plastics foam is suitably foamed polyurethane or polystyrene.
