Abstract

1327385 Jet propulsion apparatus DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 2 Dec 1970 [9 Dec 1969] 59956/69 Heading B7G Jet propulsion apparatus for an aircraft comprises a jet pipe 11 and two jet deflectors 13 and 14 movable between a first position A clear of the jet stream, a second position B in which they abut each other and engage the jet stream symmetrically to exert a braking effect, and a third position C in which they abut each other and engage the jet stream asymmetrically to produce a lifting thrust. The deflectors are pivoted on shafts 17 in carriages 15 slidable in guides 16 at opposite sides of the jet pipe. The carriages are movable from position D to position E by means of pneumatic jacks 21, and on each shaft 17 is a bevel gear 18 driven by means of a pneumatic motor 22 to rotate one of the deflectors 13 or 14; rotation of both gives the thrust reversal position B, and of only deflector 14 gives the lift position C. The deflectors are part-frusto conical; in a modification, Figs. 6-8 (not shown), deflectors (131) and (141) are partspherical and are stowed on the same side of the jet pipe so that in passing from the lift to the stowed position the lower deflector does not cross the jet stream.
