Abstract

1326617 Coated mould surfaces by evaporation ORGANON LABORATORIES Ltd 27 Aug 1970 [28 Aug 1969] 41392/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division C7] Prior to manufacture of tablets or other shaped articles by compression in a mould or matrix, vapour of a lubricant which is non- reactive with the mould surfaces and which is solid at ambient temperature is brought into contact with the mould working surfaces by means of a carrier gas. The carrier gas may be air or nitrogen, and the coating material preferably has a boiling point no more than 50‹ C. above its melting point, which is preferably at least 70‹ C., suitable materials are salicylic acid, benzoic acid or anhydride, naphthoic acid, anthranilic acid, oxalic acid, fumaric acid, maleic acid anhydride, succinic acid anhydride, an ester of these acids with C 1 -C 6 aliphatic alcohols, a C 12 -C 24 alcohol, boric acid, a urethane, a solid polyvalent alcohol, e.g. sorbitol or mannitol, a solid silicone, e.g. a disiloxane or disilane, NH 4 Cl, a solid synthetic polymer or solid metal ethylate, e.g. Al ethylate. In examples, powdered salicylic acid is vaporized by entraining it in air and passing the suspension through a tube heated by an electric coil; the vapour is condensed on surfaces of moulds for polyester or soap; fumaric acid similarly vaporized may be condensed on surfaces of a mould used for tableting citric acid-Na 2 CO 3 mixture.
