Abstract
1326244 Conjugate filaments TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 12 Aug 1970 38763/70 Heading B5B Conjugate filaments useful for obtaining fabrics etc. with special dyeing effects comprise "islands-in-a-sea"-type synthetic filaments composed of ten or more filamentary islands surrounded by a sea constituent polymer and extending independently of each other and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the filament, the sea constituent polymer having dyeing properties different from those of the island constituent polymer, a transmittance (as measured by ASTM-D-1003-61B) of at least 85% and an affinity for basic or acid dyes. The difference in dyeing properties of the islands and sea constituent polymer may be achieved by one of two methods. The filaments may either be prepared from an island constituent polymer which has an affinity for a type or types of dye which do not substantially dye the sea constituent polymer or they may be prepared from sea and islands constituent polymers which are dyeable by the same type of dyes but in which the concentration of dye-absorption sites of the island constituent is greater by 2 x 10<SP>-5</SP> mol/g than that of the sea constituent polymer. Suitable polymers for the sea and islands constituents comprise polyamides, polyesteramides, polyesters and polyolefins, where polyesters and/ or polyolefins are used for the sea constituent polymer they are chemically modified to be dyeable with acid or basic dyestuffs. Figs. 1A to 6E (not shown) illustrate cross-sections of conjugate filaments of the invention. They may be produced by melt spinning using the spinneret of Figs. 7 to 8 (not shown). In examples filaments are prepared using the following polymers (sea/islands constituents) nylon 66/nylon 6, nylon 6/nylon 66, nylon 6/ polyethylene terephthalate modified with 2% by weight sodium p-phenol sulphonate, and polyethylene terephthalate modified with 1% sodium p-phenol sulphonate/nylon 66. The filaments are stretched, knitted into fabrics, dyed using dyes appropriate to the individual polymeric constituents and the colour fastness, depth &c. if the fabrics thus produced are compared with those of fabrics prepared from conventional core-in-sheath or blend-spun filaments prepared from the same polymer mixtures.
