Abstract
1326156 Switch contacts AMP Tnc 24 Aug 1971 39758/71 Heading H1N Improved lubrication of contacts is provided by bonding particles of hexagonal graphite to the contact surface with the basal planes of the particles lying substantially parallel to the plane of the contact surface. The particles have a maximum dimension preferably less than 80 microns and are bonded by suitable impact with the contact surface so as to cause shear at the basal planes resulting in fresh graphite surface being brought into contact with the contact surface. The impact may be provided by pressing contacts briefly against a cotton buffiing wheel loaded with suitable graphite particles, or by impinging a jet of dry nitrogen containing graphite particles on to contacts as they are moved steadily past a nozzle (Fig. 1, not shown). Preferably only between 10 and 20% of the contact surface is covered, and details of experimental contacts are quoted showing much reduced wear and coefficient of friction.
