Abstract

1325730 Photo-electric coagulation time determining TECHNICON INSTRUMENTS CORP 16 Nov 1970 [4 Dec 1969] 54347/70 Heading G1A In an arrangement for determining the coagulation time of a fluid, a sample is mixed with a coagulating agent and opaque magnetic particles and the mixture is subjected to a moving magnetic field, changes in the turbidity being optically detected at the point of coagulation. Iron oxide particles in a slurry of polyvinyl, pyrollidome and glycerine are deposited by drying on discrete regularly spaced areas of a film or web 66 moved across a temperature controlled testing station in programme controlled steps and a sample and a measure of a coagulant are added at points A and B to each area before stepping to point C where the re-suspended particles are influenced by the rotating field of a rotating magnet 100, a marked change in turbidity which occurs at coagulation is detected by a photo-electric head 92 and mirror arrangement 78 to apply a signal to a timer recorder 95. The arrangement includes a table 12 carrying a number of samples 14 which are applied to the discrete areas by a peristaltic pump arrangement the samples being air spaced and including also between a pair of air spaces a washing fluid. Provision is made for returning any surplus coagulating agent to a supply container 48. The blood sample supply conduit 54 includes a heater coil 58. The process of coagulation around the moving iron particles is described.
