Abstract

1325460 Refuse disposal DOW CHEMICAL CO 2 Oct 1970 47048/70 Heading C1K In the incineration of halogen-containing organic polymer waste the emission of gaseous halides is reduced by adding an alkali or alkaliprecursor to the waste before it is incinerated. Polymers referred to are polychloroprene, polyvinyl chloride and polyvinylidene chloride. The preferred alkalies or precursors are sodium and calcium hydroxides and carbonates, but other hydroxides, oxides, carbonates, carboxylates (e.g. acetates), xanthates, sulphites or hydrosulphites of alkali or alkaline-earth metals may be used. When the precursor contains sulphur, the gases produced on incineration may be scrubbed to remove SO 2 . The alkali or precursor may be added as aqueous dispersion or particulate solid of average particle size <74 Á. The waste is preferably shredded, and may be mixed with cellulosic material, e.g., waste paper.
