Abstract
132,533. Wildermuth, F. Aug. 7, 1918, [Convention date]. Limbs, artificial.-The joints are locked automatically by downward movement and by swing- ing of the stump relatively to the artificial limb. In the illustrated construction applied to kneejoints, an arm 3 is secured rigidly to a band 2 encircling the stump tightly. Swinging movements of the stump rotate the lever about the pivot 16, while downward movement pushes, the lever down bodily to the limits allowed by the slot 18. Each of these movements operates a crank pin 5 to rotate a crank 6 in the direction shown by the arrow in Fig. 1. The movement of the crank is transmitted through a spring 14, Fig. 4, member 15, projecting pin 16, and roller-cage 11 to rollers 12 which thus are moved relatively to a ring 9 to lock the joint. The rollers form part of a oneway clutch between the ring 9 fixed to the lower leg and the axle-pin 4 fixed to the upper leg. The return swing or the raising of the stump re-positions the rollers to unlock the joint again.
