1325338 Paper-treating compositions CPC INTERNATIONAL Inc 23 July 1970 [28 July 1969] 35863/70 Heading C3U Compositions for sizing or coating paper comprise a granular starch product produced by reacting an aqueous slurry of starch granules, at an initial pH of 1À5-4À0, with an alkali metal hypochlorite (e.g. NaOCI) at below the gelatinization temperature of the starch (e.g. 90- 130‹ F.), adding a chlorine-neutralizing agent to neutralize the hypochlorite, and recovering the starch granules. The chlorine neutralizing agent may be sodium or potassium bisulphite or sodium thiosulphate, metabisulphate or hydrosulphite. A sizing composition comprises an aqueous solution having 1-25% by weight (based on total composition) of the starch as solute. The coating composition comprises an aqueous liquid having suspended therein 20- 70% by weight of solid material (based on total composition), the solid material comprising 5-25% by weight (based on solids) of the granular starch, and 30-60% (based on solids) of an inorganic pigment. The pigment may be powdered tin, blanc fixe, talc, clay, titania, calcium carbonate, satin white, precipitated chalk or ground limestone. The composition may also contain a dispersing agent, e.g. sodium hexametaphosphate, trisodium polyphosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate or potassium salts thereof; and also alkaline material, e.g. NaOH, NH 4 OH. The pH of the costing composition is preferably about 8.
