Abstract

1324655 Laminating apparatus ASAHI KASEI KOGYO KK 16 June 1970 [16 June 1969] 29190/70 Heading B5N Laminating apparatus comprising (1) a base, (2) a transparent support plate, (3) guide means supported by the base, (4) a carriage movably supported by the guide means for movement over the plate, (5) a hopper pivotally mounted on the carriage for supplying and doctoring photopolymerizable material on a film which protects a photographic transparency on the support plate and (6) an applicator mounted on said carriage for applying a flexible sheet to the upper surface of the material so that the sheet is not wrinkled. A process for producing printing plates using the apparatus is disclosed in Application 8308/73. The hopper and applicator normally move together along the guide means and preferably there is a further doctor blade mounted on the carriage between the hopper and applicator. As shown, transparent support 47 is mounted on base-plate 44 and a negative 100 and a transparent cover sheet 46 held by suction via duct 47a are laid on support 47. The base plate also carries two parallel guide rails 43 on which are mounted rollers 33 and 42. Roller 33 is connected by shaft 35 to hopper 32 pivotably mounted at 35a containing resin 31 and the back side 32b of the hopper acts as a doctor blade. A transparent backing sheet 101 is fed between guide 34 and roller 33 and is held at 44d by spring catch 45. When drive motor 40 is started roller 33 and hopper 32 move in direction C thus spreading the resin and as roller 33 depresses slide bar 48 lever 49 pivots about 49a forcing ratchet bar 51 and catch 45 up thus releasing sheet 101. Sheet 101 may be held by vacuum using duct 44b instead of mechanical forces. Sheet 101 is then rolled over the resin layer to which it has strong adhesion to form a laminate without wrinkles. Alternatively, the hopper may be pivotably mounted at the bottom and have one open side through which resin is applied and in which case a separate doctor blade between hopper and applicator roller is used. In a further embodiment, the applicator roller may be dispensed with and the separate doctor blade also acts as the applicator. In both these embodiments, the sheet 101 is not held at all and the doctor blade takes the place of guide 34.
