Abstract

1324355 Road marker studs L C HEAL 17 Nov 1970 [26 Aug 1969] 42544/69 Heading E1G In a self-cleaning reflective road stud a circular head 1a-1b carrying a circumferential array of reflectors 2a is mounted for free rotation about a vertical axis in a carrier 3 fixed in or on a road surface whereby passing traffic engages and causes rotation of the head so that the reflectors are successively either exposed through fore and aft cut-outs 3a in the casing or are moved past fixed wiper pads, Fig. 6 (not shown). The wiper pads are mounted on a ring 3b provided with reflector-exposing cut-outs. The head has radial ribs on its top surface to engage vehicle tyres. As shown the head has a single row of reflectors 2a and comprises upper and lower parts 1a, 1b bolted together and held by flexible rods 3c in a carrier 3 located in an existing road-stud casing. In various modifications the head may carry two rows of reflectors on a split ring, or a facetted one-piece reflective ring, Fig. 13 (not shown), and may have its upper and lower parts integral. The specification also discloses modified constructions, Figs. 7-9 or Figs. 10-12 (not shown) wherein a carrier (5) is directly secured in, or a shallow carrier (6) adhered and pinned on, a road surface.
