Abstract

1324087 Ruminant feed COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION 15 July 1970 [18 July 1969] 34289/70 Heading A2B [Also in Divisions A5 and C3] A nutrient composition or supplement for ruminant animals comprises the combination of a nutrient for ruminant animals and a copolymer comprising (a) units of a basic (meth) acrylate ester monomer of the formula: in which R represents H or methyl, R<SP>1</SP> is H or alkyl, R<SP>2</SP> is H or alkyl and n is 2, 3 or 4, and (b) units of a monomer selected from vinyl aromatic hydrocarbons and substituted derivatives thereof, vinyl esters, alkyl (meth) acrylates having 1 to 10 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, and acrylonitrile, the copolymer containing less than 50% by weight of units (a); said combination being of such form that the nutrient is rendered resistant to attack and breakdown within the rumen of the animal but is susceptible to breakdown and digestion within the abomasum or small intestine of the animal. The nutrient may be in the form of discrete bodies, particles, tablets or lozenges having a continuous surface coating of the copolymer or, alternatively, particles of the nutrient may be dispersed throughout a matrix of the copolymer, or coated particles may be bonded together by the same or another copolymer. The nutrient may be an amino acid or analogue such as methionine, lysine, cysteine, cystine or the hydroxy analogue of methionine; or a proteinaceous feed material, e.g. waste meat, fish meals and oils; meals pellets or concentrates formed from grains, nuts, beans, protein-rich chaffs or loaf silage; and materials such as oats, barley, soya beans, peanuts, linseed, cotton seed, vegetable oils, lucerne meal, and dairy by-products such as casein.
