1323682 Nail guns FORESTER (IRELAND) Ltd 15 July 1970 [15 April 1969 23 July 1969] 19309/69 and 37133/69 Heading B4C A nail gun having an automatic loading mechanism comprises a removable magazine 50 which can be loaded with cartridges 48, and a slider 30, which employs the recoil of the gun to eject a spent cartridge, and collect a fresh one from the magazine 50, and insert it into a breech block 10. The cartridge feed and discharge mechanism is similar to that of a Walther P38 pistol. In firing condition, a latch 32 attached to the breech block 10 is held in locking engagement with the slider 30 by a spring 38. On firing the gun by actuating a trigger 52, the breech block 10 recoils rearwardly, a pin 40 slidably borne thereby engaging a and 42 of a handgrip 16. A conical end portion 43 of the pin 40 then strikes a sloping surface 44 of the latch 32, thereby causing a latch shoulder 36 to disengage from the slider 30 which is left free to slide on the breech block 10. Rearward movement of the slider 30 then results in ejection of the spent cartridge, while a fresh cartridge 48 is collected on the return stroke, limited by reengagement of the latch 32. A nail 23 is steadied by a plastics collar 29 for driving by a piston 18, holes (not shown) in a muzzle portion 12 allowing exhausting of the breech chamber gas when a gas sealing section 22 of the piston 18 reaches a predetermined stroke to reduce the impact of the piston on a cap 31. A safety latch 84, Fig. 2 (not shown), prevents actuation of the trigger 52 except when a muzzle end 58 is engaged against a workpiece so that a pin 68 slidable relative to the muzzle end 58 is also pushed back, a wedge member (74) for actuating the latch 84 then being urged to inoperative latch position.
