Abstract

1323214 Dental chairs V NERI 19 April 1971 [17 April 1970 21 July 1970] 27077/71 Heading A4J In a dental chair the back-rest is slidable along angularly-adjustable guides and the seat is also slidable longitudinally, and these two members are moved towards or away from each other as the back-rest is moved angularly, so as to minimize relative sliding movement between these members and the patient's body. In one embodiment the movements of the members are arranged to keep the patient's head in the same vertical line. In the form shown, a main transverse support member 7 for the chair structure is mounted on diamond linkages 3..5' for height adjustment by an electrically-driven screw connecting the pivots 4, 4'; the bottom ends of the links 3, 3' are formed with inter-engaging teeth 3a, 3a', to co-ordinate the movements of the links, and the top ends of the links 5, 5' are similarly connected. The support member 7 has fixed to it a frame 12...15 formed with bearings 20 for sliding support of bars 21 fixed to a framework 24 which carries the seat cushion. Hinged at 26 to the rear ends of frame members 12 are tubular members 27 on which slide members 28 fixed to a frame 29 carrying the back-rest cushion. An electric motor 19 drives a screwthreaded shaft 18 mounted in the members 13, 14 of the support frame and engaging a nut 35 which is connected by links 32 to arms 30 on the back-rest guide members 27 and by links 37 to the back-rest supporting members 28 so that as the back-rest is moved angularly downwards it is also moved towards its hinge axis. During this movement the seat framework 24 is moved rearwards by a nut on an oppositely-threaded front part of the shaft 18. In a further form, Figs. 6-8 (not shown), the frame members 12 are slidably mounted on the main support member 7 and the latter carries a nut (48) on the screw-threaded shaft 18 so that when the latter is rotated to move the seat and backrest the whole assembly of these members is moved longitudinally on the support member and as a combined result the patient's head moves only in a vertical line.
