Abstract

1323092 Cartridges R L CLINE (KAMSON RESEARCH Ltd) 3 July 1970 32401/70 Heading F3A A cartridge for piercing armour comprises a projectile 254, frictionally engaged in the mouth of a rigid sleeve 250 containing a propellant charge 268, the projectile, containing an explosive charge 266 and an inertia operated fuse 264. A plug 274 containing a percussion or electrically fired primer is secured in the sleeve by means of a seal 276. Seals 256 arid 258 are also provided at the forward end of the cartridge. The sleeve 250 is made of steel. The cartridge is fired in a rifled barrel (280, Fig. 2, not shown) and the projectile is separated from the rigid sleeve which remains behind in the barrel. The seal 256 acts as a driving band for the projectile. Uoon firing another cartridge in the barrel, the projectile from that cartridge drives the rigid sleeve and the primer plug of the previous cartridge out of the barrel and follows them towards the target. Air pressure forces the primer plug out of the end of the rigid sleeve and it drops out of the line of the trajectory. The rigid sleeve and projectile continue towards the target, and, on reaching a wall of the target, the sleeve cuts a hole in the wall and the explosive projectile passes through this hole. In certain circumstances the sleeve does not pass right through the wall. The seals 276 and 258 act as driving bands for the seal.
