Abstract

1322923 Bar stock feeding AZUMA SANGYO CO Ltd 29 Sept 1970 46325/70 Heading B3B In automatic bar feeding apparatus in which a push rod 21 is movable under the influence of gravity on a weight 9 to advance bar stock, the motor 25 drives a member 43 in the feeding directions such as to restrain movement of the bar stock under gravitational force during that part of the advancement which corresponds to machining of the bar stock. As shown the apparatus comprises push rod 21 in a guide tube 2. A wing 19 on push rod 21 is connected by cable 17 to a stepped pulley arrangement 13, 15 from which a weight 9 is supported. In operation.-With the push rod fully retracted, bar stock is fed into the guide tube 2 by a known mechanism. As a result a motor 25 is actuated to rotate a drive sprocket 7 of a chain 5. Mounted on chain 5 is a member 43 whose nose portion 45 restrains push rod 21 from movement due to the suspended weight 9, by engaging the wing 19. As chain 5 moves, counterclockwise in the figures, push rod 21 is permitted to move under the force on weight 9. A cam plate 57 on push rod 21 then actuates a linkage 79, 77, 67, 75 (Fig. 5) to cause jaws 59, 61 to grip the bar stock 23. Then a cam plate 41 (Fig. 4) on the apparatus frame 1 causes a pivoted arm 50 to be placed in an operative position in which it engages behind wing 19. Arm 50 is mounted on the member 43 on chain 5; thus the push rod is now driven to cause its end recess 65 to engage over the end of the stationary bar stock 23. Cam plate 57 then allows the jawactuating linkage to open the jaws, whereupon the push rod advances under the influence of weight 9 until wing 19 abuts the moving nose portion 45 which then governs the advance of the push rod. Wing 19 operates limit switch 37 (Fig. 1) to cause a machine tool, e.g. automatic lathe, to close its chuck for machining. During machining the chain 5 continues to move, while the bar stock is fed, under gravity on weight 9, in steps through the machining cycles. Nose 45 will limit the movement of the push rod after each step. Motor 25 is stopped when member 43 trips limit switch 35. Eventually wing 19 actuates limit switch 31 to cause motor 25 to reverse the motion of chain 5. Nose 45 then causes wing 19 and push rod 21 to retract. During this motion plate cam 57 once again actuates the gripper jaw linkage to grip the bar stock scrap end to remove the latter from recess 65 as push rod 21 continues to retract. Finally member 43 trips limit switch 33 to stop motor 25, and the push rod is engaged by a stop pin 53. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown) the gripper device is replaced by an ejector mechanism.
