Abstract
1,217,072. Bar feeding. ZAVODY PRESNEHO STROJIRENSTVI GOTTWALDOV NARODNI PODNIK. 5 Jan., 1968, [7 Jan., 1967], No. 828/68. Heading B3B. In a method of bar feeding in a machine tool having a reciprocatable tool head, such as a turret, the bar is gripped in a chuck 4 during machining and is subsequently released to permit the feeding of a fresh length of bar into the machining area, means being provided to grip the end of the bar protruding from the chuck and which pulls a predetermined length of the bar through the chuck 4 into the machining area in readiness for the next machining operation. The means N which is mountable on the turret and reciprocatable therewith comprises a body 7 with a mounting stem 8 locatable on the turret 6 and includes jaws 5 actuable via pivoting levers 13 by guide members 14 actuated by a spring 36, by way of an axially movable and tiltable member 35. The clamping action of the jaws on to the workpiece i.e. bar, is initiated by the releasing of spring loaded pawls 22 located within the guide members 14 and which co-operate with an axially slidable stem member 25. In operation the stem 25 is initially urged forward beyond the jaws 5 by a spring 39 in which position the pawl jaws 23 engage a shoulder 24 on the stem and the jaws are urged into their radially innermost position. The forward movement of the turret effects abutting engagement between the end 2511 of the stem 25 and the exposed end of the bar 1, in the chuck, and whereby the stem is urged inwardly of the gripper body until the pawl jaws 23 are disengaged from the shoulder 24 by a tapered edge 29 a fixed sleeve 28 whereat the pressure of the spring 36 immedoately acts via the axially movable and tiltable member 35 and the guide members 14 to urge the jaws 5 into gripping engagement with the bar 1, which is pulled from the chuck 4 as the turret 6 is retracked. When the predetermined length of bar has been pulled through the chuck the latter is actuated to reclamp the bar and the gripping means is subsequentially pulled off the bar end. The stem then resumes its initial forward position ready for the next bar feed movement. The jaws of the gripping means may be rotatable to different positions to accommodate different diameter bars. In the embodiment in Fig. 5 (not shown) the jaws 5 are formed directly on levers 13, and in the further alternative embodiment in Fig. 8 (not shown) the body 7 is rotatable within the stem 8 to permit the device to grip a rotating bar.
