Abstract
1322904 Measuring blood pressure BIOLOGICAL INSTRUMENTS Ltd 3 May 1971 [9 Feb 1970] 6101/70 Heading ASK Apparatus for detecting the resumption of blood flow in a superficial artery in the measurement of blood pressure comprises means for producing a laminar stream of gas, a detector responsive to a pulse in said artery to produce a jet of gas which impinges on the laminar stream to render it turbulent, and indicating means responsive to the gas pressure reduction caused by the stream becoming turbulent. A laminar air flow is established between inlet and outlet pipes 8, 9, respectively, in a housing 7, the air flow being established by means of a suitable pump (not shown), and a pressure gauge 10 is provided in the outlet pipe 9. A housing 3 communicates with an inflatable cuff 1 forming a closed system which includes a pressure gauge 4. A compressible bellows 5 disposed within the housing 3 has an outlet pipe 6 having an aperture at its end directed towards the laminar air stream. A pulse in the artery causes an increase in pressure in the cuff 1 which compresses the bellows 5 to impinge a jet of air on the laminar air stream. Loss of laminar flow in the air stream is detected as a loss of pressure on pressure gauge 10. Alternatively, a bellows could be actuated electrically to produce the jet of gas in response to a pressure sensitive device on the patient.
