1322714 Rubber-polyester compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Sept 1970 [20 Oct 1969 23 April 1970] 51364/69 and 19559/70 Heading D1P [Also in Division C3] A process, for the manufacture of compositions comprising rubber in contact with polyester material, comprises impregnating the polyester with one or more halogen containing heterocyclic compounds containing in one aromatic heterocyclic ring one or two groups of the formulae -N=C (Halogen)- or =N-C(Hal)=, bringing the polyester into contact with the rubber and optionally shaping and vulcanising the composition. Alternatively the process comprises adding to the rubber one or more of the above heterocyclic compounds bringing the rubber into contact with the polyester and then optionally shaping and vulcanising the composition. The rubber may be any natural or synthetic rubber and it may be vulcanised or unvulcanised. Preferably the halogen substituted heterocyclic compound has the formula: wherein one or two of X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP> or X<SP>3</SP> represent halogen (preferably chlorine) and the other or others represent a group of the formula NR 2 , OR, SR 1 R or NR-NR 2 and Y is a nitrogen or carbon atom carrying as substituent a nitro or cyano group or a group of the type represented by X' or a group of the formula SO 2 R, SO 3 R or SO 2 NR 2 wherein each of the groups represented by R 1 which may be the same or different, is a H atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 20 C atoms which may be optionally substituted by one or more hydroxyl or aryl groups or halogen atoms and which alkyl groups may contain one or more oxygen atoms interrupting a C chain, or an alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, cycloalkyl or aryl groups or, in the case where a N atom bears 2 groups represented by R the 2 groups R may together with the N atom form a heterocyclic ring and any of said aryl or heterocyclic groups may be optionally substituted by one or more alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, nitro, cyano, alkylsulphonyl or arylsulphonyl groups, or halogen atoms. In those heterocyclic compounds in which Y represents a N atom it is preferred that only one of the groups X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP> and X<SP>3</SP> represents a halogen atom since compounds in which more than one halogen atom is in these positions tend to interfere with the vulcanisation of the rubber. Examples of the halogen-containing heterocyclic compounds are those in which X is a chlorine atom and the other two X groups represent optionally substituted amino groups especially those in which the amino groups are unsubstituted or carry one or two alkyl groups since these have minimal effect on vulcanisation. A typical compound used is 2-chloro-4, 6-diamino-s-triazine and these heterocyclic compounds are used in amounts between 0.1 to 10.0% by weight and preferably 0.5 to 3.0% of the rubber containing the heterocyclic compound.
