Abstract

1322708 Pulverulent fuel burners; flame detectors BAILEY METERS & CONTROLS Ltd 27 Aug 1970 [27 Aug 1969] 42618/69 Heading F4T [Also in Division G1] In a flame monitoring system having two photo-cells 32A, 32B receiving radiation from adjacent parts 33A, 33B of the flame flicker region, the photo-cells are connected in series opposition (Fig. 3, not shown) and the difference between their outputs is applied through an RC coupling (37), an amplifier (38) and a rectifier (39) to provide a D.C. flame monitoring signal. The system is responsive only to smallscale, high frequency intensity fluctuations in the emitted radiation which do not occur in both parts 33A, 33B of the flame flicker region simultaneously. The overall emitted radiation and any large-scale low frequency variations affect both detectors equally and hence do not produce a differential output. The radiation is directed to the photo-cells, which may be photovoltaic cells or photo-resistors, along sighting tubes 31A, 31B. Alternatively, a single sighting tube containing two side-by-side photocells placed in the focal plane of a lens may be employed (Fig. 5, not shown). When photoresistors are used as the sensing elements, two may be placed as adjacent arms in a bridge arrangement whose out-of-balance current is applied to the R.C. circuit. A number of monitoring systems, each employing two photocells viewing different parts of the flame, may be employed, the D.C. outputs of the systems being summed to give information relating to the quality of the flame. The burner is of the pulverulent fuel type. A mixture of pulverized coal and carrying air is supplied along a passage 15 to a chamber 14, whence it whirls about the axis of the chamber 13 into a furnace. Further air is supplied through a central passage 16. Secondary combustion air from a plenum chamber 18 common to a plurality of burners flows through an annular aperture 19 having adjustable inclined vanes to impart a swirling motion. A retractable electric igniter 21 is provided.
