Abstract

1322173 Process for methyl phenyl bis- (hydroxyphenyl)methanes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 Oct 1970 [15 Oct 1969] 50714/69 Heading C2C The title product is made by condensing a distillation fraction consisting essentially of acetophenone and a minor proportion of phenol, without separating the phenol of the fraction, with an excess of phenol. The process is preferably effected in the presence of a condensing agent and a compound containing an SH group. In general, the product is a mixture of 2,2<SP>1</SP>-, 2,4<SP>1</SP>- and 4,4<SP>1</SP>-bis-(hydroxyphenyl)isomers with a tendency for methyl phenyl 4,4<SP>1</SP>-bis-(hydroxyphenyl)methane to predominate.
